SWIM, BIKE, RUN, DONE!

"Go ahead and enjoy women’s sports like you would any other sports because they are sports."

Venus Williams

Yesterday, I attended the Women’s PHLTRI event, an annual Bike, Run, Swim triathlon in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia, organized and sponsored by DelMo Sports, and it was incredible! My best friend of over 35 years was a FINISHER, and I couldn't be prouder of her.

I so admire everyday people who push themselves to the limits to participate in extracurricular sporting events like marathons and triathlons. Not only do they promote physical fitness, but they also foster self-efficacy, confidence, and resilience.

For women in particular, who are not often celebrated or positioned as athletes, participating is empowering. It helps them set stretch goals, push their limits, and overcome obstacles, which translates into every aspect of their lives, from career to personal endeavors. When women show up for sports—they’re making a statement that they can achieve greatness, handle adversity, and inspire others. They are competing against themselves, often the fiercest and most formidable opponent.

Nearly 1,400 women participants came together, and even at 5 AM and during a remarkable heat wave, everyone was smiling and greeting each other with enthusiastic “good mornings.” My heart was full as I watched family and friends support their athletes. I loved seeing squads in matching gear, mother-daughter duos, and families and friends cheering on their athletes. The signs were a treat! "Go Mommy," "Go Wifey Go," and one that humorously said, "This was the worst parade ever!" I came equipped with my karaoke microphone and cheered on the athletes from the sidelines.

There were women of all ages, shapes, sizes, and abilities at the triathlon, a testament to the fact that sports are indeed for everyone. In a world that often celebrates only one standard of beauty or athleticism, it was liberating and empowering to see such diversity on the courses.

It takes a lot of focus, intentionality, and planning to host an event like this, and from what I can tell, the team at DelMo Sports paid attention to every detail. From all accounts and my experience, the event was flawless, and I heard athletes saying it was well worth the cost. There were plenty of bathrooms, food for nourishment, safety measures for kids, medics on standby, and clear instructions. They even had extra-large swim caps for big, curly hair and retained a psychologist to encourage fearful swimmers to take the plunge into the Olympic-sized pool. Every detail was thoughtfully addressed to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Like Venus Williams said, “enjoy women’s sports like you would any other sports because they are sports." At events like PHLTRI, the support and camaraderie are palpable. Seeing women of all ages and backgrounds come together to compete and cheer each other on is a testament to the unifying power of sports. It’s not just about who crosses the finish line first but about the journey and the community built along the way.

Although I didn't participate, I may be inspired to start slow with a cycling relay in the future. Until then, I’ll continue to cheer on my incredible friend and all the amazing women who inspire us with their dedication, strength, and passion.
